The Palmer House - Historic Hotel in Chicago
Built in 1871 and rebuilt twice, the Palmer House Hotel has always stood out on the Magnificent Mile, defying time, disaster and real estate speculation. As one of the city's most prestigious and centrally located hotels, it has hosted many celebrities from the world of politics, entertainment and literature. It is also one of Chicago's largest hotels with over 1,600 rooms.
The Palmer House has had an extraordinary history, rising from the ashes three times without ever changing location.
In late September 1871, the first building, The Palmer, was erected at the corner of State and Monroe Streets. It stood for only 13 days before being destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire in October of that year.
The Palmer was immediately rebuilt and became one of the most popular buildings in the city. The most famous politicians, writers and actors flocked there: Ulysses S. Grant, Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, and Sarah Bernhardt. Grant, Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde and Sarah Bernhardt. Its luxurious décor spans seven floors, its rooms are large and equipped with the most modern amenities, and its restaurant serves the finest cuisine. Built of iron and brick, it claimed to be the world's first fireproof hotel ("The World's Only Fire Proof Hotel").
In the early 1920s, Chicago's economy was booming, and the Palmer expanded its capacity with a new building. Construction took two years, from 1923 to 1925. When the new Palmer opened, it was the tallest hotel in the world at 25 stories.
The Hilton family purchased the hotel in 1945, and it officially became "The Palmer House Hilton," which is still in operation today. Completely renovated between 2007 and 2009, the hotel combines historic tradition, design and modern amenities, cementing its reputation as an iconic, must-visit hotel in the heart of the Windy City. With 1,639 rooms, it is now the second largest hotel in the city behind the Hyatt Regency Chicago.
Those who don't have the opportunity to stay overnight can enjoy a drink in the lobby bar or simply stroll through the common areas.
